Pundits of early American writing contend that, ââ¬Å"the strife present in early American Literature is internal,â⬠and that it, ââ¬Å"is frequently introduced as having an astronomical scale,â⬠with ââ¬Å"characters [who] are regularly distanced and isolatedâ⬠(class handout).â These inside clashes happen in the protagonistsââ¬â¢ psyches and they drive the plotââ¬â¢s activity by concentrating on battles about the very idea of life so the characters set in opposition to them experience the ill effects of their issues on an individual level in this manner rendering them totally alone and separate from different characters. It is their forlornness in a period of mental anguish that makes the dramatization and anticipation vital for mirroring the inside activity of the story that prompts a readerââ¬â¢s comprehension of the character is part in showing up at an answer for the issue. Two creators that help this thought are Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe.â Both creators will in general spotlight on heroes that are both allegorical and truly split from society and experiencing genuinely interior battles over decisions and activities of their pasts.â Moreover, these two authorsââ¬â¢ characters exhibit clashes that analyze the outcomes of past follows up on the present and the terrific plans of their lives. Edgar Allen Poeââ¬â¢s story, ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usherâ⬠is one case of this kind of inward clash and its impacts on the character, Roderick Usher.â This story utilizes the gothic components of the dull, discouraging setting to impart the confinement of first Roderick and Madeline Usher and afterward the storyââ¬â¢s hero and storyteller whose psychological limits debilitate inside the infected setting of the Usher household.â The storyteller looks to support his companion, Roderick Usher defeat some baffling disease portrayed as, ââ¬Å"some abusive mystery, to uncover which he battled for the essential courageâ⬠â (refer to here). His inner voice at that point parts like the Usher house and picking great over wickedness, the storyteller settle his contention when he, ââ¬Å"fled aghastâ⬠from the house as it shook and disintegrated to the ground.â His endurance and overcoming of the inside battle he assisted with making as he looked for approaches to assist his with sicking companion is appeared through his retelling of the story from a current viewpoint that perceived the ghastliness and passionate torment of his the contention that pushed ahead the storyââ¬â¢s activity. Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s story, Dr. Heideggerââ¬â¢s Experimentâ⬠presents another case of a character who experiences an interior clash of astronomical extents that prompts his confinement from the remainder of society.â Dr. Heidegger has a mixture that when expended turns around maturing and renders individuals youthful again.â He entices others with its enchanting guarantees of interminable youth yet he doesn't want that state for himself; he is substance to live mirror the rot of his examination, ââ¬Å"a diminish, antiquated chamber, trimmed with spider webs, and besprinkled with antique dustâ⬠â (Hawthorne). Dr, Heideggerââ¬â¢s enthusiasm for the mixture is just its capacity to revive a blurred, fifty-year-old rose given to him by his adoration that has since a long time ago died.â His visitors are just a piece of his examination to make an elixir sufficiently able to give everlasting life to his rose with the goal that it might go with him to death, ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢My poor Sylviaââ¬â¢s rose!ââ¬â¢ discharged Dr. Heidegger, holding it in the light of the nightfall cloudsâ⬠(Hawthorne). Upon the acknowledgment of his disappointment and his hopeless, forlorn battle to bring back the past and the adoration it bore, he settle his inward hopelessness with the acknowledgment that the rose is no less wonderful dead than alive.â He states, ââ¬Å"I love it too thusâ⬠right now he presumes that it is truly Sylvia that he cherished and the rose, in its wilted state was simply an image of that affection. Both Poe and Hawthorne are known for making storyââ¬â¢s with characters who endure inner clashes against dim, discouraging setting that help profoundly upsetting airs and moods.â Moreover, their characters think about issues that look to respond to addresses that have no arrangements accessible to man.â They possibly resolve their inward battles when they perceive the vanity of their battles. The storyteller in ââ¬Å"The Fall of the House of Usherâ⬠and Dr. Heidegger in ââ¬Å"Dr. Heideggerââ¬â¢s Experimentâ⬠reflect pundits thoughts regarding early American literatureââ¬â¢s treatment of contention and its effect upon people who get themselves absolutely alone and estranged through the decisions they made.â The frightfulness of this acknowledgment drives them to at last purpose and beat the wretchedness they are liable for developing. à Ã

Growth Population And Itââ¬â¢S Effects In The La Essay Example For Students
Growth Population And Itââ¬â¢S Effects In The La Essay ter Twentieth Century In ChinaFrom the 3. 68 billion people that will be added to the world population between 1995 and 2050, Asia will contribute some 2 billion. This enormous increase is due to the already massive size of the population. Most of this growth will occur in the next three decades. Between 1995 and 2025 Asias population will grow by 1. 35 billion between 2025 and 2050 the increase is projected to be just 658 million. China is the worlds largest population, estimated to be around 1.24 billion in 1998. It grows at a rate of 1. 3% per year or 44,100 people a day. There are now more people living in China than whole world 150 years ago. The population broke the billion mark in the 1982 census, the results of which provided the justification for the strict one-child policy which effectively curbed rapid population growth. In the 1990 census, China counted 1. 133 billion people, over the next decades the world population will inevitably age. This is an unavoidable consequence of large birth cohorts during the 1950s and 1960s and the rapid fertility decline since the 1970s. In 2025 the baby boomers of the 1950s and 60s will be between 65 and 75 years of age. These large aging cohorts are followed by the relatively small baby bust generations of the worldwide fertility decline. In 1950 there were only 131 million people of age 65 and older; in 1995 their number had almost tripled and was estimated at 371 million. Between now and 2025 the number will more than double again; and by 2050 we will probably have more than 1.4 billion elderly The percentage of elderly increased from 5.2 in 1950 to 6. 2 in 1995. By 2050 one out of ten people worldwide will be 65 years of age or more. While currently population aging is most serious in Europe and Japan, China will experience a dramatic increase in the proportion of elder people by the middle of the next century. This is largely due to the countrys success in family planning, which rapidly reduced the relative size of birth cohorts since the 1970s. The future number of people on the globe, evidently, is an important antropogenic factor of global change. However, even more important the changes that need to happen in order to help solve Chinas growing population. Part 2Admittedly, China is already an aging society by international standard: the number of people aged 60 and over accounts for more than 10% of the total population; those aged 80 and over number 8 million and that number still grows by 5.4% annually. Additionally, the traditional ethics that prevailed in China for the past millenniums are eroding amidst rapid social transformations touched off by the market-driven reforms. It is no longer morally appealing, nor economically feasible, for children to support their elderly parents at home. Economists estimate, for example, that by 2050, two working people will have to support an elderly citizen. Reflecting the changing times, old people are increasingly willing to be on their own for care. A random survey conducted by reporters of Liaoning Daily, the largest newspaper in north Chinaââ¬â¢s Liaoning Province, yielded some insights into how old folks in China today plan to take care of themselves. The survey showed that most senior citizens prefer self-care as opposed to home care staying with children for care. Of the 30 people interviewed at random at one morning exercise session in June 1999, 77% were aged 70-79, 13% 60-69 and 10% over 80. In living choices, 70% live by themselves. .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .postImageUrl , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:hover , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:visited , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:active { border:0!important; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:active , .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959 .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9f2257e48831d0f9daa7aa759dad9959:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay about Online Dating Analysis Essay Even among the nine spouseless, six (67%) live alone. The monster and Victor Essay Example
The monster and Victor Essay Throughout the novel it becomes apparent the Frankenstein is a morally weak person. His creation kills Frankensteins younger brother, William, and Justine Moritz, a young girl adopted into the Frankenstein household, is blamed for the murder. Although Frankenstein knows Justine is innocent, he doesnt come forward because he fears no one would believe him. His courage does not match his arrogance and his grandiose ideas of himself. He might feel bad that Justine would have to hang, but he isnt brave enough to do anything about it. I was firmly convinced in my own mind that Justine, and indeed every human being, was guiltless of this murder. p. 62 Towards the end of the novel, many changes, somewhat ironic, become apparent. Firstly is the transformation of Victor Frankenstein from a happy, innocent and bright little boy with a loving family and a contented childhood to a guilt-ridden man, obsessed by his work. He becomes despondent, and at times suicidal, not to mention homicidal. By the end of the novel Frankenstein is ill beyond cure and so traumatised from his lifelong battle with his creation that he has little strength to recount his tale to a his friend, Robert Walton. The Monster has murdered most of his family, and those left of his family are distant from him. Another ironic change to Frankenstein is that at the start of the novel he is so obsessed with the creation of a super human being that he gives up everything else in his life to focus on this work. Although Frankenstein realises that he has made a mistake, and regrets bringing the being to life and recognising that he has ventured beyond the acceptable boundaries of science, by the end of the novel, when he is with his friend Walton on a boat in the Arctic, hunting down the monster, he urges them forward even though they will probably die, showing that he never really learned his lesson that sometimes there is point when you should stop, even if it is possible to go on. This ice is not made of such stuff as your hearts may be; it is mutable and cannot withstand you if you say that it shall not. p. 164 In contrast, his friend Walton is more sensible and concerned about the lives of the seamen and does not want to go on. Alas! yes; I cannot withstand their demands. I cannot lead them unwillingly to danger, and I must return p. 165 He is taking responsibility for his crew; something that Frankenstein could never to do. Walton learns that you have to consider other peoples lives and feelings before trying to achieve your own goal. Throughout the novel, Frankenstein hardly ever thinks about other peoples feelings, whether it is his creation, his father, Justine, or Walton and his crew. Frankensteins Creation The second main character of the story is Frankensteins creation. His creation is also a complex character and it is through him that Shelley deals with issues of identity, prejudice and responsibility. Frankenstein doesnt give his creation a name, something that denies the Monster an identity. This implies that the Monster is not unique or an individual, which at first denies him a real existence. Frankenstein calls the creature various names such as It showing he doesnt regard the creation as having a soul, Monster, Wretch which are both derogatory terms implying monstrosity and Daemon implying he is naturally evil or even possessed by an evil spirit. Ultimately, Frankenstein implies that the being belongs in Hell. From this, the Monster starts to believe he truly is a fiend and actually a fallen angel but refuses to accept that it is his own fault and warns Frankenstein to take responsibility for his actions. One night the creature takes refuge in a small hovel adjacent to a cottage. In the morning, he discovers that he can see into the cottage through a crack in the wall. Observing his neighbours for an extended period of time, the monster notices that they often seem unhappy, though he is unsure why. He eventually realizes, however, that their despair results from their poverty, to which he has been contributing by surreptitiously stealing their food. Torn by his guilty conscience, he stops stealing their food and does what he can to reduce their hardship, gathering wood at night to leave at the door for their use. Vowing to learn their language he acquires a basic knowledge of the language, including the names of the young man and woman, Felix and Agatha. Unobserved and well protected from the elements, he grows increasingly affectionate toward his unwitting hosts. The monsters growing understanding of the social significance of family is connected to his sense of otherness and solitude. The cottagers devotion to each other underscores Victors total abandonment of the monster; ironically, observing their kindness actually causes the monster to suffer, as he realizes how truly alone, and how far from being the recipient of such kindness, he is. This lack of interaction with others, in addition to his namelessness, compounds the monsters woeful lack of social identity. Formerly a mysterious, grotesque, completely physical being, the monster gradually becomes a verbal, emotional, sensitive, almost human figure that communicates his past to his creator, Victor Frankenstein in eloquent and moving terms. But, far from seeing the monsters humanity beneath his grotesque appearance Victor just fears him more. Before, it was the monsters physical strength, endurance, and apparent ill will that made him such a threat; now, it is his intellect. The monster clearly understands his position in the world, the tragedy of his existence and abandonment by his creator, and is out to seek either redress or revenge. For the first time, Victor starts to realize that what he has created is not merely the scientific product of an experiment on dead matter but an actual living being with needs and wants. While Victor curses the monster as a demon, the monster responds to Victors coarseness with surprising sensitivity, proving him an educated, emotional, exquisitely human being. For the reader, whose experience with the monsters ugliness is second-hand, it is easy to identify the human sensitivity within him and sympathize with his plight, especially in light of Victors relentless contempt for him. The gap between the monster and Victor, and between the monster and human beings in general, is thus narrowed. One of the ways in which the monster demonstrates his eloquence is by alluding to John Miltons Paradise Lost, one of the books he reads while living in the peasants hovel. The first of these allusions occurs in these chapters, when the monster tries to convince Victor to listen to his story. He entreats Victor: Remember, that I am thy creature: I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel. P. 73 By comparing Victor to God, the monster heaps responsibility for his evil actions upon Victor, scolding him for his neglectful failure to provide a nourishing environment. In this part of the novel, the Monster starts to question his own existence, after reading work of literature. This shows he is now intelligent and philosophical. In contrast to this, Frankenstein takes life for granted. Without a real identity, the Monster needs more information about himself. He is self-aware, which is the main quality that separates the Monster from animals. This is unlike Frankenstein who has little self-awareness. My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come? What was my destination? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them. P. 99 The Monster also questions why humans are always the victimised ones, and why he is always the perpetrator. He is bemoaning mans narrow-mindedness and injustice. While everyone else has rejected and committed crimes against him, he is still the one to be prosecuted. He then talks of the innocent people he has killed, and begins to feel remorse for his deeds: You hate me; but your abhorrence cannot equal that with which I regard myself This shows his guilt for what he has done, in contrast with Frankenstein who never seems to learn his lesson and never shows remorse. The Monster requests a partner from Frankenstein, a basic request and a basic counterbalance to the immense loneliness the Monster feels. What I ask of you is reasonable and moderate; I demand a creature of another sex and it shall content me. Oh! my creator, make me happy do not deny me my request! This shows the Monster is very realistic compared to Frankenstein and also that he desires someone that will accept him for who/what he really is. This is compared to Frankensteins ideas which are God-like in proportion. Through out the novel the two main characters take on reversed roles. The monster starts to hate Victor because he has no one to relate to and so tries to make Victor feel the pain of his loneliness and so kills anyone close to Victor, finally killing Victors new wife and indirectly Victors father, who dies a few days later, of the shock. Like the monster, Frankenstein finds himself utterly alone in the world, but instead of pity for his creation, he just feels hatred and with his hatred he soon takes on very inhumanity of which he accuses the monster. He becomes very ill by his worry and obsession and follows the monster to the barren Arctic north to track him down to murder him, just as the monster has murdered his loved ones. There he meets his friend Walton who helps him search for the monster. They become trapped in ice and Victor, knowing that he is near death, urges his friend Walton to carry on their search. Frankenstein dies and Walton finds the monster crying over his creator. The monster tells Walton of his sufferings and how he regrets killing people and now that his creator is dead, the only person he ever related to, he, too, is ready to die so he leaves for the Northern ice. This open ending leaves the questions in the mind of the reader to ponder. 1) Through the character of Victor Frankenstein, we are invited to ask what makes us human and what are our limits. 2) Through the character of the monster, we are left asking, was he Adam or Satan? Was he a victim or a criminal? And so what does it mean to be human?

Pierre Bourdieu Biography and His Work
Pierre Bourdieu Biography and His Work Pierre Bourdieu was a renowned sociologist and public intellectual who made significant contributions toà general sociological theory, theorizing the link between education and culture, and research into the intersections of taste, class, and education. He is well known for pioneering such terms as symbolic violence, cultural capital, and habitus. His bookà Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Tasteà is the most cited sociology text in recent decades. Biography Bourdieu was born August 1, 1930, in Denguin, France, and died in Paris on January 23, 2002. He grew up in a small village in the south of France and attended a public high school nearby before moving to Paris to attendà the Lycà ©e Louis-le-Grand. Following that, Bourdieu studied philosophy at the Ãâ°cole Normale Supà ©rieure- also in Paris. Career and Later Life Upon graduation, Bourdieu taught philosophy at the high school of Moulins, a small town in mid-central France, before serving in the French army in Algeria, then taking a post as lecturer in Algiers in 1958. Bourdieu conducted ethnographic researchà while the Algerian War continued. He studied the conflict via the Kabyle people, and the results of this study were published in Bourdieus first book, Sociologie de LAlgerie (The Sociology ofà Algeria). Following his time in Algiers, Bourdieu returned to Paris in 1960. Shortly after he commenced teaching at the University of Lille, where he worked until 1964. It was at this time that Bourdieu became Director of Studies at the Ãâ°cole des Hautes Ãâ°tudes en Sciences Sociales and founded the Center for European Sociology. In 1975 Bourdieu helped found the interdisciplinary journal Actes de la Recherche en Sciences Sociales, which he shepherded until his death. Through this journal, Bourdieu sought to denationalize social science, to break down the preconceived notions of ordinary and scholarly common sense, and to break out of established forms of scientiï ¬ c communication by commingling analysis, raw data, ï ¬ eld documents, and pictorial illustrations. Indeed, the motto for this journal was to display and to demonstrate. Bourdieu received many honors and awards in his life, including Mà ©daille dOr du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in 1993;à the Goffman Prize from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996; and in 2001, the Huxley Medal of the Royal Anthropological Institute. Speaker responce Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Speaker responce - Assignment Example 2. Insights from the presentation After hearing Joe Ellis speak about the five things to do in a job, I have come to a conclusion that, in order to be successful, one must always keep things simple on the job. In accomplishing tasks and getting along with colleagues, for instance, there are no complicated rules to follow. The workplace ethics of obedience, punctuality, and respect still apply. Obeying what the boss says and speaking up when something needs to be said is always valued at work. Delivering high-quality work output and accomplishing them on time is always appreciated. Reaching out to co-workers and establishing friendly relationships with them makes for a fun and relaxed working environment. Achieving these goals, however, requires a considerable amount of effort. The next principle I learned from Joe Ellis is the value of being open. Openness results to transparency, seamless flow of ideas, and assertiveness. First, co-workers would be able to deal more effectively with a person who shows his/her strengths and weaknesses. Showing oneââ¬â¢s true identity is a way of gaining the trust and respect of co-workers. Second, being open encourages a person to share his/her ideas that can be useful in any business organization. A free-flowing stream of ideas would result to sharing of knowledge among co-workers. Finally, being open makes a person more assertive. Knowing when to speak up and what to say is very important in the workplace. A person who is not inhibited would always say whatââ¬â¢s in his/her mind at the right time. Another important thing I learned from the presentation is the value of collaboration in the workplace. There is a saying that ââ¬Å"No man is an islandâ⬠which is very obvious in the workplace. More and better things can be achieved if people work together. Having the same vision would motivate each member of a business organization to always put his/her best foot forward in order to achieve his/her goals. A person who can work independently and is, at the same time, a team player would encourage his/her co-workers to also do their best in whatever they do. 3. Workplace Issues The first issue in the workplace that Iââ¬â¢d like to talk about involves age, gender, race, and class. In the workplace, one would find all sorts of people coming from diverse background. The challenge lies in overcoming and looking beyond those differences to ensure smooth and friendly workplace relationships. The issue of race, for instance, is very critical in a globalized workplace. One would find different types of people coming from different cultural backgrounds. It is expected that tolerance to different cultures will be displayed in the workplace. The issue of gender and sexual preferences is another interesting issue that needs to be dealt with proper care. Each person posses a unique view of his/her gender which, in turn, influences his/her psychological, intellectual, and emotional make-up. Respect and tolera nce to every personââ¬â¢s gender in the workplace, therefore, is highly needed. While it is ideal to have a smooth and congenial workplace relationships, various conflicts among co-workers may happen from time to time. The issue of resolving conflicts is another workplace issue that needs attention. Gossips, backstabbing, insubordination, and unethical conduct are some of the reasons that spark workplace conflicts. This leads me to the basic rule that apply in any workplace ââ¬â respect. If each co-worker would treat others with respect, then some of these conflicts can be

Analyse and evaluate the impact of volunteer tourism on host communities - Essay Example In the first place, firms try to optimise everything and one subject of the optimisation process is the human resource. For this reason, the human resource department may be picky in dealing with finding the human resources that are truly competent or will have optimum contribution for the firmââ¬â¢s future success. There is a prevailing notion that the younger are the chosen employees, the better it will be for the company. However, there might also be substantial flaws in this argument because there are also prevailing young age discriminations in the workplace. In particular, young people might be less likely promoted because of their age (Sargeant, 2006, p.84). At the other end, old age discrimination is also prevalent, because older people are perceived to be somewhere in the portion of economic inactivity, leading to the firmââ¬â¢s likelihood of obtaining less possible output from them (Sargeant, 2006, p.91). Added to this, people belonging to senior age group are also un der the area of discrimination, especially on the ground of promotion, training opportunities and redundancy (Sargeant, 2006, p.90). On the other hand, the group that will be less likely to experience possible discrimination at the workplace is composed of the middle-age employees, but these are also the people who have most of their needs for feeding their children and some women in this group suffer a significant discrimination (Sergeant, 2006, p.88). In other words, in all possible ages of workers, discrimination might be remarkable in the workplace, because they are subjects to the firmââ¬â¢s prevailing requirement of optimising what seems to be substantial for the companyââ¬â¢s welfare. In other words, not everyone of varying age has the chance to be given the optimum break in a firm. The work at hand tries to depict the actual probable problems linked to inequality through age discrimination in the workplace. According to the study of Roscigno et al. (2007,

Global Staffing Systems Essay Example for Free
Global Staffing Systems Essay In the article Designing and Implementing Global Staffing Systems: Part I Leaders in Global Staffing, Wiechmann, Ryan, and Hemingway propose several components of global staffing systems and also provide us with similarities and differences among the global staffing situations at several MNCââ¬â¢s. They analyze six multinationalsââ¬âAgilent Technologies, Dow Chemical, IBM, Motorola, Proctor and Gamble, and Shell Oil. One thing common to nearly all the companies is the use of recruitment software. Additionally, an interview is an integral part of the hiring process. Other companies use tests as a measure of employee aptitude and one company even uses a training program to train candidates for the interview. What makes these successful is the global nature of both recruitment and hiring. Agilent uses universal questions that are asked of all candidates as part of the pre-screening process. They also post jobs internally at the same time as posting externally. If two candidates present with the same qualifications, and one is internal, and the other external, then the internal candidate is hired. Dow Chemical uses a model that provides training for the applicants. Additionally, like Agilent, Dow uses an internal hiring practice that allows employees from all but the highest management to self-nominate for jobs within the company. Dow also uses a standardized testing procedure that requires that the test administrators receive testing prior to administering the test. IBM uses an aptitude test to select entry level technical applicants. The test is multi-lingual, and a testing guide is created to help interpret the test results. Motorola also uses a standardized testing procedure that has been validated over 11 countries and five years. Proctor and Gamble uses a scorable application, but then also utilize an English proficiency test. Shell Oil uses an English-only approach to testing, as they use English in all their business dealings. As noted, most of these companies do utilize an interview strategy in their hiring practices. There are similarities that have been noted in the practices of the companies in their hiring practices. The use of assessment tools and interviews in hiring is common to all the companies. In terms of differences, the use of English-only tests as indicated by Shell Oil show that some companies are interested in maintaining a global language for business. Others give their assessments in the native language. Additionally, the use of employee recruitment software is sporadic, but used within the constraints of the company. What can be learned from this? We can learn that MNCââ¬â¢s learn about employees not just through the traditional face to face interview, but through assessment tools that are objective and adjusted for the cultural norms of the society in which they are administered. We can also learn that companies exhibit due diligence when they hire, and to that end they tend to get a better quality of hire and that improves the overall efficacy of the company.

The Theme of Love Essay -- Love Poetry Literature Essays
The Theme of Love ââ¬Å"Romantic love, physical love, unrequited love, obsessive love.â⬠Compare the ways the poets have written about the theme of love, bringing out different aspects of it. In the six poems I have studied, I see a wide range of different types of love mentioned. I will be looking at 3 poems in depth. These are: ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠, written by Robert Browning, ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠, written by the Duke of Ferrara and ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠, written by Andrew Marvell. When it comes to romantic love, ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠contains some elements of it. ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠also includes aspects of physical love. When it comes to unrequited love, ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠hold a large scale in them. ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠also includes shades of unrequited love. ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠contain features of obsessive love. In my essay, I would like to pay particular attention to unrequited love because it shows how the women in the poems are seen as a possession, which the men must rightfully have. I will also look at aspects of obsessive love. ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠is not generally positioned in this type of love as the poem does not really contain obsessive love, but in my opinion it can be placed in the category as the speaker is pressuring the girl into having sex with him and he wants her to sleep with him now. He is being seen as obsessive and wanting things his way, immediately. This can be seen when he says: ââ¬Å"HAD we but world enough, and timeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This shows that time is short and wasting away. This quote is important as it is a powerful opening, stressing the impact of time upon them. I will first compare ââ¬Å"Porphyriaââ¬â¢s Loverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"My Last Duchess... ...it just for pleasure? The narrator is transparent in what he wants. He only wants his mistress for sex and pleasure. The poem starts with the pronoun ââ¬Å"weâ⬠but as the poem progresses, it starts to separate into individuals: ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠and ââ¬Å"thouâ⬠. At the end, it turns back to ââ¬Å"usâ⬠. The first stanza of the poem makes the reader think that it is a love poem, when really it is a lust poem. The narrator uses the images of fear and lost opportunity and time as a threat to the woman. The writers, in the poems that I have compared, bring out love in different ways. There are different tactics involved, which is what I think make all these poems unique and interesting to read. Each poem brings about different types of love. The poems all try to get the women they think they rightfully deserve, except for ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠where he is obsessive about his woman.

Child Abuse Essay
If you were placed in a position were your life was put into danger would you risk escaping? This question was asked by Jaycee Dugard everyday during her eighteen year being held captive. In her memoir A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard explains to us why she didnââ¬â¢t try to run from her abductor Philip Garrido even though she was given so many chances to do so. In most situations it is very difficult for victims to escape their abusers control. In the past it was near impossible for victims of abduction to escape safely on their own. With the realization that ââ¬Å"We have seen a significent increase in the number of thru the means of strangers, family or friendsâ⬠(Amber Alert 1). It has been easier to help child abduction victims with systems like the Amber Alert system, yet it is still difficult for the victims to leave on their own. Abuse victims along with Dugard also struggle with gaining the strength to leave. Years after Dugard was rescued she says ââ¬Å"You must find your voice and not be afraid to speak upâ⬠(Dugard 148). Something she regrets doing while being held captive. In the end the claim that victims of abuse should take more responsibility to escaoe their abusers control should be challenges because of the difficulty to escape their abusers control and to gain the strength to leave. Not only do child victims of abuse deal with the control of their abuser, but many adults deal with the same issue. Many women deal with the challenge of leaving their abusive partner, but fail because of the partner control and power they have over their victims. Many women find it difficult because they remain emotionally and economically dependent on their batterer (Domestic Violence 1). In most marital situations their is a cycle of abuse and the familyââ¬â¢s life becomes a cycle of violence. ââ¬Å"The man who was terrifying and intimidating turns into a remorseful, needy, and dependent man. The woman who was battered then will feel sorry for the man and recommit to him in a fantasized hope that the abuse wonââ¬â¢t happen again. But the cycle of abuse will begin again, often becoming worseâ⬠(Domestic Violence 2). In order to escape this abuse the cycle must be broken. According to Blich, ââ¬Å"Stranger kidnapping victimizes more females then males, occurs primarily at outdoor locations, victimizes both teenagers and school-age children, is associated with sexual assaults in the case of girl victimsâ⬠(Blich 1). After being abducted children are usually brainwashed and manipulated, gaining the abductor even more control. This is what happened in Dugards situation. Philip Garrido, Dugardsà abductor, told her that he was hurting her so he wouldnââ¬â¢t have to hurt other little girls, thereby making Dugard feel that if she did try to leave it would be her fault for the pain he caused others (Dugard 158). In doing so Garrido gained complete control over Dugard. However strong you are most can agree that it is very difficult to leave somebody you are dependent on, yet it is necessary if you want t o go on happily. Therefore the claim that abuse victims should take more responsibility to escape their control is difficult for anyone. Many will argue that people who are abused should take more responsibility to to escape from their abuser. In some situations outsiders will argue that we should outsmart our abuser and learn from it making us stronger to leave. According to The Washington Post, ââ¬Å"They escaped these things not through the efforts of good samaritans, but through recognizing a bad situation and either getting away from it, avoiding it or screaming and kicking to draw attentionâ⬠(St. George 1). This proves that children are capable not responsible. Another argument is that the child who is being abducted should be able to help themselves and escape the situation. ââ¬Å"The child should do whatever is necessary to stay out of the car, because once the child is in that car, it dramatically reduces the chances of escapeâ⬠(St. George 2). This is a lot of responsibility put onto a young child. How do we expect an eight year-old girl to escape a potential abuser if many forty year-old women cant leave an abuser they have been with for years. During Dugardââ¬â¢s eighteen year abduction several visuals were taken to show the pain of her loved ones. It can be proven that many were concerned with her abduction. In the visual ââ¬Å"Missingâ⬠published in The Telegraph (2009). We are shown both Dugards mother, Terry Probyn, and step-father, Carl Probyn, they look heartbroken and distressed. Some would argue that with how much Jaycee Dugard knew she was loved, she should of gained enough strength and motivation to escape and go back to living her everyday life. However she was unaware of this while being held captive. The argument that in domestic abuse options are available to leave or available to encourage victims to leave is true, yet difficult. Victims have the option of professional help and gaining awareness of the situation. With the cycle of abuse it is very hard to get to the point were you understand you need the help, then there is the struggle of actually going ahead and doing it. Regardless of the several arguments that people can challenge we have proof from specificà situations like Dugardââ¬â¢s along with more common issue like marital dispute that without finding overall strength and gaining the courage to escape the abuser control it is impossible to escape and go back to your normal life. Gaining strength is one of the most difficult things to do in life. One way we gain strength is having support and happiness. How do we gain strength if we donââ¬â¢t have either? This faces millions of people daily who are in abusive relationships. They simply cant find the strength to leave. In Dugards memoir she says although she is unhappy she is too afraid of the risk of leaving and doesnââ¬â¢t know how she wo uld be able to take care of herself and her two daughters. ââ¬Å"One of the reasons I stayed was I wanted my kids to be safe. The outside was scary for me. I was so afraid that if i left or tried to leave and take them both with me I wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to protect themâ⬠(Dugard 276). Even her knowing the fact that if she were to escape successfully her daughters could have a much better life, yet if they werenââ¬â¢t successful they would have to continue living in hiding in the backyard of Garridoââ¬â¢s home. She didnââ¬â¢t have enough strength to take the risk although the successful end results were so much better then her current situation. In abuse situations victims struggle with the same issue of strength. In between the cycle of abuse there is only a small gap between the man being violent and the women feeling remorseful and forgiving him. Where gaining the strength in between that small gap is difficult especially when it would need to be regained the next time the abuse restarts. Women also have other options. Most women have a supportive family or homes they can go to keep safe. But strength is key and difficult to obtain when one is constantly bringing you down. Although more options are available to leave, like hot-line cards in bathrooms for abuse victims or Dugard being taken into public with the option to run, we need strength to take them. Strength is a necessity to leave making the claim that abuse victims are responsible for leaving their abuser difficult to prove. In conclusion finding the courage to leave an abuser is an unthinkable challenge to those placed in that position. Without finding the strength and escaping the overwhelming control of the abuser its near impossible. As time goes on there becomes more options for abuse to happen or lead to abuse. ââ¬Å"One in five children ten to seventeen receive unwanted sexual solicitations onlineâ⬠(Blich 1), which can lead to a more serious abuse. No matter how different the situationsà are the abuse victims suffer through they can relate back to the same struggles. According to Jayvee Dugard after her long term abuse she refers to life today as ââ¬Å"A light that I thought had been extinguished was coming back to lifeâ⬠(Dugard 238). While in the position of abuse its difficult to find the strength, but it can be gained again. The difficulty of escaping the abuser will also be difficult. It will remain difficult while recovering from the abuse. The claim that people should take more responsibility to escape their abusers? False.

Analysis Of The Motif Of Black Invisibility, By Michelle...
ââ¬Å"Blacknessâ⬠: An Invisible Disposition Explored Through Free Enterprise and Invisible Man As observed throughout history and various societies, the notion of a ââ¬Å"racial hierarchyâ⬠proves to be a superficial design which ultimately assigns value to a group of people based solely upon their skin color. As a result, certain groups are promptly associated with influence and supremacy, while others are disregarded in their ââ¬Å"inherentâ⬠inferiority. Michelle Cliffââ¬â¢s Free Enterprise and Ralph Ellisonââ¬â¢s Invisible Man approach this paradigm by facilitating their readersââ¬â¢ understandings regarding the debilitating ostracism associated with the social construct of ââ¬Å"blackness,â⬠as well as the metaphorical societal invisibility that is suffered as a result. In Free Enterprise, Cliffââ¬â¢s implementation of the motif of black invisibility is prevalent throughout the depiction of a leper colony. In the literal sense, the colony serves the purpose of preventing those with leprosy, a disease which ââ¬Å"flourishes among the darker races,â⬠from infecting the rest of the general populace (Cliff 35). In the metaphorical sense, however, its existence in the work is meant to represent the estrangement and containment of marginalized people from the other, ââ¬Å"superiorâ⬠society. Through the eyes of Annie Christmas, the channel of the narratorââ¬â¢s observations, the ââ¬Å"numericalizedâ⬠lepers are described as a secreted and unknown people, ââ¬Å"hidden away as she had hidden herselfâ⬠(Cliff 42). In the colony, there is
